California has shut down a lot of events, but they can’t stop the hot rodders from gathering for a SoCal cruise event. With year round great weather, car events happen all year long in California. But with Covid running rampant the State has shut down much of the recreational activities. Luckily for car guys, the California cruising community figure out how to make that a Covid friendly activity. In your car, or outside socially distancing, enjoying hot rods is safe and fun and this event has become huge. Luckily we had Wes Allison on hand to shoot tons of photos of all the cool rides that were there. The mix of rides was epic, because there have been no events specifically tailored toward a particular automotive subset. That means the lowrider guys, off-road guys, hot rodders, and muscle car drivers all flocked to hang out together for this one.

We have a bunch of photos, of hundreds of the cars in attendance, for you to check out in our galleries. If you missed any of the action, want to see if your car is in our coverage, or just want to see a bunch of killer hot rods, trucks, and more then this is the coverage you crave. While the rest of the country is locked down, under bad weather, or just not doing stuff yet, California has the weather and the rides that can be shown off year round.

Plymouth spent the early Sixties in crisis mode. Sales of the 1960 Plymouths had been disappointing. Although the 1961 car was a continuation of the 1960 body shell, it got a complete makeover. Only the roof and doors were carried over—all other sheetmetal was new.

The tailfin fad had run its course and Chrysler styling chief Virgil Exner pruned them away for 1961. That doesn’t mean that Exner had suddenly become conservative. Taillights were housed in pods and the front-end styling was controversial, to say the least.

Inside, the dashboard was restyled. The band-type speedometer remained in a pod mounted on top of the flat dash, but was no longer gear driven. Instead a unique magnetic system operated the speedometer, and was said to be more accurate. An optional clock was mounted under the speedometer and was flanked by temperature and fuel gauges. A blank face greeted customers who didn’t pay extra for the timepiece. The extra-cost heater had push button controls.

Ultimately, sales slid even further. 

It’s unfortunate that Plymouth styling didn’t appeal to more buyers. Under the skin, Plymouths were good cars. Unibody construction offered better rigidity than the previous body-on-frame Plymouth. The torsion-bar front suspension gave better handling than competitors Ford and Chevrolet, but was still smooth riding. V8 horsepower ranged from 230 to 375 in 1961. Then, too, for economy-minded buyers, there was a highly regarded six-cylinder engine. 

Chrysler Corporation introduced its compact Valiant in 1960, powered by a new ohv six that replaced a flathead six with roots that went back to the Thirties. To fit under the Valiant’s low hood, the inline six was inclined 30 degrees to the right and became commonly known as the “Slant Six.” Plymouth often labeled it “30-D Economy Six.”

Tilting the engine did more than help it clear the hood. It also created room for long intake-manifold runners that resulted in more efficient breathing. Valiants used a 170-cubic-inch version of the Slant Six, while full-sized Plymouths, which also adopted the engine, had a 225-cid unit with 145 horses. 

Slant Six performance and fuel economy were both good for its size, and over time the engine gained a reputation for bulletproof durability. The ’61 Plymouth brochure noted that the full-size Plymouth six “walked off with top honors for its class in the 1960 Mobilgas Economy Run.” Besides being thrifty, the Plymouth six also produced 10 more horsepower than the similarly sized sixes from Ford and Chevrolet.

The car on these pages is a midline Belvedere sedan powered by a Slant Six mated to a three-speed manual transmission. It has optional power brakes, but not power steering. Base price was $2439 and 40,090 Belvedere sedans—six and V-8—were manufactured. Only the base Savoy four-door sedan had a bigger run. 

When photographed, the Belvedere was owned by North Shore Classic Cars of Mundelein, Illinois. Unrestored and with fewer than 65,000 miles, it was repainted in its original Desert Beige color in 2013. Jim Sisty of North Shore Classic Cars describes the Belvedere as “unique looking and peppy enough.”

Ever-toughening vehicle-safety expectations mean that late-model vehicles tend to be more homogeneous from a styling standpoint than vintage cars and trucks–even those from just a few decades ago. Still, automakers can shock us. The new-for-2020 Kia Telluride, for example, stands out as both attractive and distinct looking.

What I’ve collected here are five of my all-time favorite SUVs—I think. I tend waffle on stuff like this, but I am pretty happy with this list. Some runner-up trucks that fell just short of my top five are the International Harvester Scout, early examples of the Ford Bronco, and any number of Sixties and Seventies Jeeps.

I have to give Land Rover credit for defining how a luxury-oriented off-road vehicle should look. I recall pumping gas into these rigs when I worked at a service station in the Eighties. The Jeep Cherokee may not have caught fire with consumers in the same way the Ford Explorer did, but this compact Jeep did define what a small personal-use SUV should look like. Simple and purposeful, the Cherokee is one of those designs that seem to get better looking over time. The Cherokee holds the distinction of having been produced by three different corporate entities: American Motors (1984-1987), Chrysler Corporation (1988-1998), and DaimlerChrysler (1999-2001).

Jeep attempted to recapture the tidy look of the Cherokee with the 2007-2017 Patriot, but that crossover’s unibody construction and softer design features never really clicked with Jeep enthusiasts.

An all-time favorite. I delight in spotting examples in good condition, and thankfully they are not rare around Chicago. Everything about this truck is perfect: the stout and upright stance, the clean flanks, the minimal trim… I even love the wheels on the example pictured above.

This was the end of the line for the Blazer name–at least until the 2019 model year. Chevy’s big SUV was renamed Tahoe for 1994, when a 4-door model was added to the lineup. The 2-door Tahoe was discontinued after 1999. The very similar GMC Yukon of this vintage is also a great-looking truck.

If good-looking vehicles with complicated histories are your thing, you should really love the Laforza. Manufactured in Cheraso, Italy, the Laforza featured V8 power, a hand-crafted cabin with LOTS of leather upholstery, and bodywork penned by legendary designer Tom Tjaarda (best known for his work on the Ferrari 365 California, De Tomaso Pantera, and the Chevrolet Corvette Rondine Concept).

The 5.0-liter Ford V8 and Laforza name were exclusive to the U.S. market. In Europe, the truck was marketed as the Rayton-Fissore Magnum, which is something of a mouthful.

I’m enamored with the Laforza’s clean flanks, simple shape, and open and airy greenhouse. Per Wikipedia, 1200 LaForzas made their way to the U.S., so the odds of you ever spotting one are not dismal—just low.

The first-generation BMW X5 was very important as the brand’s first-ever crossover, and in my book it’s also the best-looking truck the German carmaker has ever manufactured. From a time before BMW grilles grew huge, the inaugural X5 is clean, elegant, and devoid of extraneous trim elements. The large glass area and the relatively low beltline also work in the truck’s favor. To the designers’ credit, this pioneering SUV is also instantly recognizable as a BMW–likely a valuable characteristic back in 1999 when explaining to brand loyalists why the company was now building SUVs.

Dodge based the Super Bee on its midsize Coronet. The standard engine was a 383-cid V-8 that in 1970 put out 325 horsepower. The Super Bee was capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in about seven seconds, and ran the quarter mile in around 15 seconds. The price for a ’70 hardtop coupe was $3074; a companion pillared coupe went for $3012. 

Still, one wonders why a Super Bee was donated instead of a more ordinary model. Brandt Rosenbusch, manager of FCA Historical Vehicles, speculates that the car might have just been an extra.

LS Fest came and went. MoParty had it’s first showing. That means that it’s time for Mustangs, for Cobras, for Broncos, and every other thing that wears the legacy of Henry Ford on it’s sleeve. Holley’s Ford Fest is on and going strong in Kentucky, and we’re on hand to take care of things. Chad is doing what Chad does best, which is to entertain crowds in the circle pit with his infectious delivery, and I’m running around shooting photos in-between trips to the swap meet to look for parts for two Mustangs that keep pestering me for attention. And it’s a good thing that the swap meet was there, because parts are comin’ home with me! But enough about that, you’re probably just here to see what was going on at the show. Well, I don’t blame you one bit. Only in it’s second year, the Intergalactic Ford Fest is proving once again to be wildly popular. You don’t suppose that it’s because Bigfoot V, the behemoth with the 10-foot-tall tires on it, was around and about, do you?

So, you’re looking for a crossover SUV, small—but not too small—maybe with three rows of seats. It should have all the conveniences you can imagine . . . and pay for. Oh, and it’s got to be a Mercedes-Benz.

This is your lucky year.

Test Drive: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB250

The GLB-Class is a new addition to Mercedes-Benz’s crossover SUV lineup for 2020. Size-wise, price-wise, and alphabet-wise, it slots between the subcompact GLA-Class and compact GLC-Class in Mercedes’s model roster.

The fine folks in Stuttgart have launched a brand-new premium compact crossover for 2020, the GLB, that you can order with 3-row seating and so much tech and comfort stuff that you might need another SUV to help cart it all home. There’s a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, but only one fairly frugal powerteam—at least for now.

Consumer Guide got its first taste of the GLB250 as a 5-passenger 2-row model with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Base price with delivery of such a vehicle is $39,595 (subtract $2000 for front drive but add $850 for two third-row seats). However, the test truck was festooned with enough extras to reach a total retail price of $57,800.

The GLB250 offers lots of high-tech interior features… if you’re willing to pay extra for them. A 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and 10.25-inch center display screen are included in the $1650 Premium Package. The $1150 Multimedia Package adds a full-feature navigation system with MBUX augmented reality–a feature that adds digital navigation-aid graphics to the video display from a forward-facing camera. The center console is home to a touchpad infotainment-system controller with a wrist support; this interface requires a bit of acclimation.

The GLB delivers good interior room within its tidy overall dimensions—it’s 182.4 inches long on a 111.4-inch wheelbase. There was comfortable clearance for passengers’ heads and legs in both rows of the model that CG tested, though there’s only enough room across the rear for two adults. Seats are comfortable and supportive, with leg-supporting cushion extenders in front. Rear seat backs are manually adjustable for optimal comfort.

In back, the cargo area doesn’t look all that big at first glance, but the 22-cubic-foot space is fairly squared off, maximizing its usefulness. (We’ll guess that the need to accommodate three seating rows ruled out any notions of rakish roof and tailgate designs that would reduce load space.) The second-row 40/20/40 rear seats fold flat with the cargo floor, adding another 40 cubic feet of capacity, but with a small gap between the surfaces. The cargo bay has tie-down hooks, with straps and net pouches to contain small items. There’s a 12-volt power point for added convenience.

The extra-cost black/red leather upholstery on our test vehicle gives the cabin an extra-sporty ambiance. Thanks in part to the tall, upright roofline, occupant space is very good in both the front and rear seats.

The GLB250 powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automated-manual transmission. Rated at 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the powerplant is more than good enough for alert around-town driving and safe, swift highway operation while in default “Comfort” mode. “Sport” makes it perceptibly quicker answering accelerator inputs, while the automated manual really stands its ground against upshifts—so much so that it’s almost annoying at low speeds, where it can keep the engine revving a little shy of the shift point as you’re trying to be a responsible citizen on the streets of your neighborhood. The EPA expects the GLB250 4MATIC to make 23 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 26 in combined operation; we averaged 23.7 mpg over 185 miles of driving, 60 percent of which was in city-type conditions.

Summoning Sport mode conjures up a ride firm enough to let in some jolts you might not feel in Comfort, but it is better controlled. (Note that the test vehicle was equipped with extra-cost 20-inch wheels and adjustable-damping suspension.) The CLB250 handles smoothly with good response to steering inputs, and braking action is good too.

Among the standard-equipment features not replaced by options on CG’s tester were:

  • LED headlamps and taillamps

  • 4-way manually adjustable steering column

Our test vehicle wasn’t equipped with the available third-row seat, but given the tidy cargo area behind the second row, the GLB’s third row is best suited for small children. The GLB is one of the smaller vehicles in its class, but it offers very respectable cargo space: 20.1 cubic feet behind the second-row, and 62 cu. ft. with the second row folded.

Heated and ventilated leather seats (in place of MB-Tex upholstery), satellite radio, and wireless charging are among extra-cost items that might be built in to some luxury-nameplate vehicles. Also available (as part of a $2250 Driver Assistance Package) are features such as Active Steering Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Lane Change and Active Lane Keeping assists, Active Blind Spot Assist, and Active Emergency Stop Assist.

As equipped, there was a premium look and feel to the cabin with the aforementioned red-and-black leather and optional natural-grain lindenwood trim. There’s no skimping on soft-to-the-touch surfaces in the cabin, including the entire upper half of the dash and all four doors. Cabin storage alternatives are a decently-sized glove box, modest console box with split-top armrest lid, net pouches on the front-passenger side of the floor tunnel and on the backs of the front seats, and four door pockets with bottle holders. Exposed cup holders are set in the console and the pull-down rear armrest.

The GLB250’s powertrain is a 221-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It supplies satisfying power, but it can feel a bit high-strung at times. Twenty-inch, black-finished AMG multi-spoke wheels are a $1050 option.

The Premium Package that was installed in CG’s tester brought in a massive screen with a digital instrument cluster and center display for infotainment that are 10.25 inches apiece. Thumb buttons on the steering-wheel spokes control the driver-information functions, but the touchpad on the console and surrounding buttons reign over a complex audio/nav/app display. This reviewer set up audio presets without much fuss, but using the pad to move around the screen requires more attention than a driver should be devoting to it. Separate climate controls have lots of buttons, including repetitive flipper switches for temperature selection.

If you are in fact looking for a well-turned-out and useful SUV like the one described at the start, bring your dreams—and a bit of cash—to the Mercedes store. You’ll find what you want.

With its extra-long wheelbase, boxy roofline, and short rear overhang, the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class strikes a unique profile in its class, and delivers a good amount of utility within its compact exterior dimensions. Plenty of cutting-edge technology features and luxurious trimmings are available, but adding them drives up the bottom-line price.
