Wheels UP! NMCA Expands Their Stock and Super Stock Program To Include Individual Championships!

Big news here for stock and super stock racers as the NMCA has decided to expand their offerings for class racers in 2022. For about a half decade these guys have run a great stock/super stock combo category and its popularity has lead them to split the classes off into their own eliminators and offer individual championships for each as well. This is great news for racers who are looking for more places to compete in their class legal hot rods.

Additionally, they have hired Jim Bailey, who has been an ardent class supporter from the beginning and is a great racer himself as the assistant tech director with a focus on these two categories.

Overall this is great news for the organization and it speaks to the health of class style racing across the country. Car counts are great across the board and racers having options mean that they’ll stay that way. The NMCA will be dropping news bombs all winter and we’ll keep you up to date.

Here’s the full story –

NMCA Launches Stock Eliminator and Super Stock for 2022 Championship Season

Santa, Ana, CA (October 18, 2021)  – For the past five seasons the NMCA has successfully run the Coan Racing Stock/Super Stock Combo category in its robust championship line-up. New for 2022 will be independent Stock Eliminator and Super Stock Eliminator categories, both competing for prestigious NMCA championships at all six national events.

“The competition is fierce in Stock/Super Stock and we’ve seen huge growth in the category since we began hosting it five seasons ago. Those car counts give us the opportunity to run each eliminator independently,” said Gene Bergstrom, NMCA Director of Racing Operations and longtime drag racing competition guru.

Rollie Miller, General Manager and National Event Director at the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals added even more good news; “We’re also bringing in well-known and respected class racer Jim Bailey as an Assistant Tech Director to focus on growing those two categories as well as our popular Nostalgia Super Stock class. Jim’s a great addition to our staff and proof of our commitment to growing grassroots drag racing and offering a high-level of customer satisfaction on and off the drag strip.”

Stock Eliminator and Super Stock Eliminator are legacy drag racing categories with very specific rulebooks that have been fine-tuned for nearly a half-century of their existence. In NMCA competition, the racers qualify based on NMCA-spec indexes with eliminations run off a dial-in.

The NMCA Muscle Car Nationals kicks off its 2022 campaign at Bradenton Motorsports Park, located in Bradenton, Florida with the Muscle Car Mayhem event the weekend of March 17-20. The tour moves north April 21-24 to historic and legendary Rockingham Dragway for the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals. The third national event happens across from the Gateway to the West at World Wide Technology Raceway (Madison, IL) for the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing on the spring weekend of May 12-15.

The second half of the season kicks off with the biggest event on the schedule, the NMRA/NMCA Power Festival at US 131 Motorsports Park July 21-24, which is located in Martin, Michigan. The indelible NMCA All-American Nationals goes down at the Ice Cream Capital of Drag Racing that is properly known as Summit Motorsports Park (Norwalk, Ohio) August 25-28. The season finale happens on the hallowed grounds of Lucas Oil Raceway (Indianapolis, Indiana) September 22-25 with the NMCA World Street Finals Presented by Chevrolet Performance.

NMCA officials will be releasing the Stock Eliminator and Super Stock Eliminator competition format through its website, NMCAdigital.com, in the coming months along with full details on its six national events including advance ticket sales, daily schedules, host hotels, and other important information. The American Station Wagon Is Coming Back…From Korea – The Genesis G70 Wagon Looks Like It Might Be Awesome

The American Station Wagon Is Coming Back…From Korea – The Genesis G70 Wagon Looks Like It Might Be Awesome

(By Tom Lohnes) – Genesis, the modern-day 2000’s BMW, is really killing it right now, with the sporty G70, the Luxurious G90, the G80 that mixes the 70 and the 90, as well as 2 SUVs that are eating up sales. Well, what if I told you that there will be a more practical version of the G70 that isn’t the GV70 crossover? That’s right, It’s a wagon!

Why exactly Genesis is doing this I have no idea, but I have to thank them because wagons, especially sportier ones like the G70 3.3T are very hard to come by in the US. This isn’t some lifted wagon that poses as a crossover either, this is an honest-to-God family hauler, and I love that. Spyshots by Motor1.com suggest the G70 wagon will take the handsome styling of the sedan version and translate it nicely into the long-roof version. The interior should also be the same, just a bit more spacious, because this is a wagon after all. Under the hood will lie a choice of a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which makes 300 horses and gets the job done, but upgrade to the optional 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6, and you get 368 horses, as well as 360 lb-ft of torque to get your wagon to 60 in the high 4-second range.

German brands, take notice. If Genesis sells enough of these things, we may see limited quantities of the BMW 3-series touring and Audi A4 Avant start to pop up here, and maybe even some M340iTs and S4 Avants. We can only hope.

Boost Makes Better: This Build and Dyno Test Of An 8-71 Blown 427ci LS3 Is Awesome – Airboat Engine!

Boost Makes Better: This Build and Dyno Test Of An 8-71 Blown 427ci LS3 Is Awesome – Airboat Engine!

If you are going to build a kick ass airboat engine, you need a few things. The first is obviously some horsepower, the second is  a deep reservoir of torque, and the third is reliability so you are not gator food out there somewhere in the wilderness. This video is a comprehensive and awesome look at the build of just such an engine. In the typical fashion of the channel, Jeff at Horsepower Monster takes us through the build from the block on up to the end results of dyno testing. Starting with a Dart LS-Next block and stuffing the whole thing full of the best parts in the aftermarket, the engine is a 427ci power maker topped with Prestige Motorsports (the engine builder here) own design LS3 11-degree cylinder heads. Breaking news: they work.

After all is said and done, the engine sits more than 6ft tall on the dyno cart all hooked up. The height will not be a problem in an airboat where literally the sky is the limit. There are two sets of dyno pulls made, one with the supercharger basically at 1:1 with the engine and the second with a little bit of overdrive. Both pulls are made on 93-octane gas and the engine is only pulled to 6,000 RPM which is the max it will see in an airboat.

The power is impressive for both pulls and we agree with Jeff that with some higher octane gas, a little more OD, and some more RPM, they could be way bigger! This is a great video and an awesome engine.

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

We’re guessing someone lost their job for this one. You are going to watch this 1970s Chevrolet parts film which stars Evel Knivel and makes literally no sense at all. The theme of the film is “conflict” and it is illustrated by a series of scenes where animals eat other animals, black and white movies are shown, and Evel Knievel jumps stuff on his motorcycle, sometimes crashing, sometimes not. Throw in a dose of 1970s Anchoman-level hilarity with a bikini-clad woman, and you have yourself one of the most singular odd things we have ever seen.

Make no mistake, Knievel would never turn down a gig, especially one with Chevrolet that likely was a great payday for reading some cue-cards. The company definitely did not hire him for his suave acting ability because this dude is straight up stiff while narrating the action. By action, we mean the bizarre things we are shown on screen.

Oddly, while Chevrolet parts are mentioned a handful of times there’s barely (if ever) a Chevrolet car shown as a prop in the film. This whole thing is some weirdo theater of the mind that was likely schemed up by an executive’s kid. “Hey Johnson, get my son a job in the media department and let him run wild!”

Obviously, Knievel was majorly famous at this point and his star only grew bigger. Note that he mentions that someday, “I’ll jump a mile….” we all know how that quest ended.

You have to see this one to believe it.

Horsepower On The Waves: This Film Showing The 1956 Gold Cup Hydroplane Race Is Awesome – Aircraft Engines Galore

Horsepower On The Waves: This Film Showing The 1956 Gold Cup Hydroplane Race Is Awesome – Aircraft Engines Galore

Boat racing has always been the realm of big money and when we say “always” we mean ALWAYS. Think about the days of Gar Wood hammering international competition in the 1920s and then the evolution from there to where we are even today. Off-shore and hydroplane racing are huge money endeavors which are a fantastic spectacle. Hell, even drag boat racing will sink a decent wallet in no time flat but the allure of competition on the water has drawn and continues to draw the passion, the money, and the horsepower, to liquid race tracks all over the world.

So the Gold Cup was THE race to win in hydroplane racing during the era when this video was made. The boats themselves are amazing hot rods. Made of wood and powered by huge aircraft engines, they are violent and blazingly fast. You’ll see a Rolls-Royce mill, Allisons for days, and they all have this just killer look that make them some of the most visually stunning racing machines of their era.

While we have seen some of these old hydros sitting in museums and stuff, maybe occasionally idled around in the water, we had never seen them actually racing hull to hull before this video. How these drivers saw anything or didn’t have their guts shaken out of their throats over the course of the race is stunning. Watch the boats bounce, heave, and generally pulverize themselves on the water. This is wild!

Great horsepower, great history, and some of the coolest boats ever built.

FTI Performance Introduces the Gen 3 XPM Billet Bolt Together Torque Converter Line

This is big news for those drag racers out there who are running a high horsepower combo and backing their engine with a torque converter. FTI Performance Introduces the Gen 3 XPM Billet Bolt Together Torque Converter Line which is the most tunable, most interchangeable, and most user friendly ultra high performance torque converter on the market. Because each piece is interchangeable, the racer can carry multiple stators, turbines, pumps etc to make their combo work to its best ability and they can do it without having to wait on parts!

This truly is an innovation from FTI and one that we believe racers will take advantage of. Back when the torque converter started to make major inroads into ultra-high horsepower drag racing, the common refrain was that “you can’t tune them like a clutch…” but the real truth is that now you basically can. Amazing!

FTI Performance Introduces the Gen 3 XPM Billet Bolt Together Torque Converter Line

December 10, 2020 (DELAND, FL) FTI Performance expands their product line with the introduction of the Gen 3 XPM billet bolt together torque converters. This line is revolutionary to the converter market as each piece is interchangeable to make it self-tunable. With multiple options for various components, FTI gives the customer the ability to change their converter to fit their personal combination.

Each component of the FTI Gen 3 XPM torque converters are CNC-machined and interchangeable. Multiple options for the billet stators are available for roots blowers, screw blowers, nitrous, N/A, Pro Charger, and turbo. The customer has a choice between spragless and sprag combinations. The billet front cover fits all flex plate combinations (bolt patterns) including HEMI. All turbines are available with all splines from Lenco, GM, and Ford. With multiple pump angles available, all pumps are available with bolt on capability for the Lenco, GM, and Ford. The torque converter fits up to 1” thick block plates without the need of changing covers. Another customizable option is the ability to change the 10” torque converter to a 9” unit and vice versa to adapt to the customer’s combination.

With each part balanced and sold separately, the customer has the ability to buy each piece one at a time like an engine build. As the first user-buildable torque converter from FTI performance, the FTI Gen 3 XPM torque converters provide the customer convenience and tunability.

“The industry needs technology that the end user can capitalize on without the help of a freight truck,” says FTI Performance Chief Technical Officer, Greg Samuel. “When they need it and how they need it!  This converter allows interchangeability as well as tunability beyond any other converter available.”

With convenience, tunability, and interchangeability, the FTI Gen 3 XPM torque converter is the perfect option for customers who have multiple vehicles or race in varying conditions. For more information about these torque converters and the rest of the FTI Performance line up, call (386) 736-5816 for more information.

The “WTF?!” Files: 100 MPH With Cops On Your Tail And Your Pit Bull Driving The Car!

The “WTF?!” Files: 100 MPH With Cops On Your Tail And Your Pit Bull Driving The Car!

Lakewood, Washington is an, *ahem* interesting place to live. Situated just a hair north of Joint-Base Lewis-McChord, Lakewood has the aura of a “military town”…slightly dangerous, slightly weird, with an almost seemingly endless amount of odd moments occurring that leave troops laughing and cracking jokes and superiors issuing warnings and do-not-patronize orders. Name it…drunk and disorderly conduct, drugs, soldiers showing their ass on Friday and Saturday nights, and that’s before you take in the rest of the town. It’s a fairly common theme in a lot of towns that are close to big military bases…but trust me, after years of living in the area and half a decade living right next to Lakewood, you would think that I would’ve seen and heard just about any and everything that could happen there. But without a doubt, the news coming out of Washington State is stunning, because this is the kind of thing that you’d joke about with your friends after a beer or two, not what you’d expect to see on the 5 o’clock news.

A 51-year-old man is facing a litany of charges, including driving under the influence, reckless driving, hit-and-run and felony eluding after the Washington State Patrol chased him from south of Seattle fifty miles north to Arlington, where officers were able to stop the 1996 Buick he was a passenger in. Fifty miles of Interstate 5 traffic, two hit-and-run crashes in Seattle, and it took spike strips to get the chase to come to an end. And yeah, passenger…I said that right. I’m quoting KOMO 4 (ABC)’s explanation of what was going on verbatim from their story:

“Troopers said the man told them he was teaching his dog how to drive and the pit bull was found in the driver’s seat while the man was steering the driving wheel.”

I….I’m sorry, WHAT. Sir, the world’s going crazy enough without this. Enjoy your padded cell. Meanwhile, somebody get that dog a treat and some lessons at Bondurant. Only two accidents between south Seattle and Arlington while doing 100+ mph is an achievement!
