Wheels UP! NMCA Expands Their Stock and Super Stock Program To Include Individual Championships!

Big news here for stock and super stock racers as the NMCA has decided to expand their offerings for class racers in 2022. For about a half decade these guys have run a great stock/super stock combo category and its popularity has lead them to split the classes off into their own eliminators and offer individual championships for each as well. This is great news for racers who are looking for more places to compete in their class legal hot rods.

Additionally, they have hired Jim Bailey, who has been an ardent class supporter from the beginning and is a great racer himself as the assistant tech director with a focus on these two categories.

Overall this is great news for the organization and it speaks to the health of class style racing across the country. Car counts are great across the board and racers having options mean that they’ll stay that way. The NMCA will be dropping news bombs all winter and we’ll keep you up to date.

Here’s the full story –

NMCA Launches Stock Eliminator and Super Stock for 2022 Championship Season

Santa, Ana, CA (October 18, 2021)  – For the past five seasons the NMCA has successfully run the Coan Racing Stock/Super Stock Combo category in its robust championship line-up. New for 2022 will be independent Stock Eliminator and Super Stock Eliminator categories, both competing for prestigious NMCA championships at all six national events.

“The competition is fierce in Stock/Super Stock and we’ve seen huge growth in the category since we began hosting it five seasons ago. Those car counts give us the opportunity to run each eliminator independently,” said Gene Bergstrom, NMCA Director of Racing Operations and longtime drag racing competition guru.

Rollie Miller, General Manager and National Event Director at the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals added even more good news; “We’re also bringing in well-known and respected class racer Jim Bailey as an Assistant Tech Director to focus on growing those two categories as well as our popular Nostalgia Super Stock class. Jim’s a great addition to our staff and proof of our commitment to growing grassroots drag racing and offering a high-level of customer satisfaction on and off the drag strip.”

Stock Eliminator and Super Stock Eliminator are legacy drag racing categories with very specific rulebooks that have been fine-tuned for nearly a half-century of their existence. In NMCA competition, the racers qualify based on NMCA-spec indexes with eliminations run off a dial-in.

The NMCA Muscle Car Nationals kicks off its 2022 campaign at Bradenton Motorsports Park, located in Bradenton, Florida with the Muscle Car Mayhem event the weekend of March 17-20. The tour moves north April 21-24 to historic and legendary Rockingham Dragway for the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals. The third national event happens across from the Gateway to the West at World Wide Technology Raceway (Madison, IL) for the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing on the spring weekend of May 12-15.

The second half of the season kicks off with the biggest event on the schedule, the NMRA/NMCA Power Festival at US 131 Motorsports Park July 21-24, which is located in Martin, Michigan. The indelible NMCA All-American Nationals goes down at the Ice Cream Capital of Drag Racing that is properly known as Summit Motorsports Park (Norwalk, Ohio) August 25-28. The season finale happens on the hallowed grounds of Lucas Oil Raceway (Indianapolis, Indiana) September 22-25 with the NMCA World Street Finals Presented by Chevrolet Performance.

NMCA officials will be releasing the Stock Eliminator and Super Stock Eliminator competition format through its website, NMCAdigital.com, in the coming months along with full details on its six national events including advance ticket sales, daily schedules, host hotels, and other important information. Race Week 2.0 – Day Three – Tulsa, Oklahoma – Andy Doesn’t Get The Passes He Wants, But Still Leads!

Race Week 2.0 – Day Three – Tulsa, Oklahoma – Andy Doesn’t Get The Passes He Wants, But Still Leads!

Rocky Mountain Race Week is in the books, and we were traveling the route with all these folks so we could bring you the FREE livestream that we had going all week long. It was a week full of fun, adventures, carnage, and more, but even if you were there you wouldn’t have been able to see it all. There is that much going on! But thanks to the folks at Motion Raceworks we’ve got more cool video coverage from the entire week and we’re going to share it all with you one day at a time. They were on-site with their parts merch trailer and were helping people out with great stuff all week long. This is the third video from Day Three at Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa Oklahoma, which means lots of cars are racing but carnage is starting to become a problem for some racers. It’s hump day and that means there are a lot of people who need to be good today or their week will be over.

You have to finish the drives, the racing, AND stay consistent if you want the win and that is much harder than it might look, especially if you are in one of the faster classes.

Motion Raceworks Rocky Mountain Race Week Daily Coverage: Day One Action From Thunder Valley

Motion Raceworks Rocky Mountain Race Week Daily Coverage: Day One Action From Thunder Valley

This is the first video from Day One at Thunder Valley in Noble Oklahoma, which means everyone is racing and there is no on road carnage or anything yet. This is the day where everyone thinks everything is great and that they can win this whole thing. Spirits are high. At least until the racing gets going.

Why? Because some of these poor folks are going to tear their stuff up before they ever get to leave the first track. The good news is that they have all night to work on them because we don’t leave for the next track until the next morning, and the drive isn’t horrible from Thunder Valley to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis. Plus, there is the World’s Largest Summit Racing Equipment store on the way and it’s full of great parts to fix most anything.

Between Summit and the Motion Raceworks trailer full of parts, there was no shortage of new stuff going on hot rods Sunday night.

B. FORCE, HAGAN, AND M. SMITH QUALIFY NO. 1 AT DODGE//SRT MILE-HIGH NHRA NATIONALS PRESENTED BY PENNZOIL

MORRISON, Colo. – Brittany Force unleashed the quickest run in the history of Bandimere Speedway on Saturday, rocketing to the No. 1 position in Top Fuel in front of a huge crowd at the Dodge//SRT Mile-High NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also qualified No. 1 in their respective categories at the eighth race of the 2021 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Force, a former Top Fuel world champ, put together a monstrous track-record run of 3.717-seconds at 326.00 mph in her 11,000-horsepower Monster Energy dragster to close out qualifying. That gave Force her third No. 1 qualifier in 2021 and 23rd in her career, as she tries to close in on her first win of the season and also her first victory on Thunder Mountain in Denver. She’s been close throughout the year, advancing to a pair of final rounds and Force will look to finish the job on Sunday.

“John Force Racing as a whole, we took a step back in 2020. Every single one of my guys put their faith in John Force Racing and every one of them returned,” Force said. “I think that shows so much about character and their loyalty to this team. (Crew chief David) Grubnic said he was going to push it like he always does, so thank you to my guys. I’m excited to be here and I’m just glad to be back in Denver. I really want to win on the mountain. I’ve never won here in Denver and hopefully, we can win this thing tomorrow.”

Points leader and three-time defending world champ Steve Torrence finished second thanks to his impressive run of 3.778 at 327.11 from Friday. Mike Salinas took the third spot with his run of 3.836 at 320.51.

Matt Hagan moved a step closer to picking up his first victory at Bandimere Speedway, as he qualified No. 1 thanks to his run of 3.966 at 319.22 from Friday in his 11,000-horsepower Mopar Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. That run gave Hagan his second No. 1 qualifier of the 2021 campaign and 42nd in his career. Winning in Denver has been one of the few things that has eluded the defending world champ and Hagan is in a prime position to change that on Sunday.

“We’ve got to go rounds, there’s no doubt about it, but we’ll take that No. 1 qualifier right now,” Hagan said. “We’ll take that momentum into raceday tomorrow. This Hellcat is running strong and I cannot wait to put on a show tomorrow for all these fans here in Denver. It’s going to be awesome.”

Alexis DeJoria qualified second with her run of 3.982 at 323.50 on Friday and Tim Wilkerson jumped to third during the final qualifying session on Saturday with a pass of 3.984 at 312.35.

After qualifying in the No. 1 spot on Friday in Pro Stock Motorcycle, Matt Smith only got better on Saturday, improving on each run and finishing the day with a pass of 7.113 at 189.47 on his Denso Auto Parts/Stockseth/Matt Smith Racing EBR. It hands the points leader and defending world champ his second No. 1 qualifier of the year and the 45th in his career, and also gave Smith the speed record at Bandimere Speedway. Smith made the quickest run of every session in qualifying, giving the standout plenty of confidence heading into eliminations.

“We’ve got a good bike,” said Smith, who made the second-quickest run on Thunder Mountain as well. “This bike, it’s running mean. We’ve gradually gone faster and all in all, to be No. 1 and have Angie (Smith) No. 2, you can’t say enough about having Denso bikes No. 1 and No. 2 and husband and wife going No. 1 and No. 2 as well.”

Angie Smith took the second spot after her strong run of 7.134 at 186.67 and Andrew Hines, the 2019 winner and five-time champ at Denver, qualified third after his run of 7.170 at 188.10 in the final session.

Justin Bond finished No. 1 in the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service. He ran a 5.976 at 230.45 to place himself atop the competitive category.

Boost Makes Better: This Build and Dyno Test Of An 8-71 Blown 427ci LS3 Is Awesome – Airboat Engine!

Boost Makes Better: This Build and Dyno Test Of An 8-71 Blown 427ci LS3 Is Awesome – Airboat Engine!

If you are going to build a kick ass airboat engine, you need a few things. The first is obviously some horsepower, the second is  a deep reservoir of torque, and the third is reliability so you are not gator food out there somewhere in the wilderness. This video is a comprehensive and awesome look at the build of just such an engine. In the typical fashion of the channel, Jeff at Horsepower Monster takes us through the build from the block on up to the end results of dyno testing. Starting with a Dart LS-Next block and stuffing the whole thing full of the best parts in the aftermarket, the engine is a 427ci power maker topped with Prestige Motorsports (the engine builder here) own design LS3 11-degree cylinder heads. Breaking news: they work.

After all is said and done, the engine sits more than 6ft tall on the dyno cart all hooked up. The height will not be a problem in an airboat where literally the sky is the limit. There are two sets of dyno pulls made, one with the supercharger basically at 1:1 with the engine and the second with a little bit of overdrive. Both pulls are made on 93-octane gas and the engine is only pulled to 6,000 RPM which is the max it will see in an airboat.

The power is impressive for both pulls and we agree with Jeff that with some higher octane gas, a little more OD, and some more RPM, they could be way bigger! This is a great video and an awesome engine.

Pontiac Power Video: 535ci Of Butler Performance Built Blower Motors Cranks Out More Than 800hp!

Pontiac Power Video: 535ci Of Butler Performance Built Blower Motors Cranks Out More Than 800hp!

This is the cure for the common LS engine. You are going to watch an awesome 535ci, Butler Performance built Pontiac engine whine and grunt out more than 800hp and more than 850 lb/ft of torque on the dyno. The insane thing is that the torque peak is made at 3,8000 RPM according to the Butler guys so that would make this thing an awesome street engine in every way. It will mangle tires from here to eternity. We have no idea what model of Pontiac this engine was headed for but we can only guess it is a GTO of some form or fashion. We’d love to see it in a Bonneville or Catalina but we likes ’em big. That’s just our thing.

Note the fact that this thing has a damned AC compressor hooked to it as well. That means whoever is driving around with this monster under the hood is also going to be doing it in comfort. How cool is that?! Far be it from us to suggest modifying he awesome work done by Butler Performance but if one wanted to make some more horsepower in a pretty quick fashion they could swap out the wagon-wheel sized top pulley on the blower, load the thing up with good gas, and really let it eat. Dumb for a street engine but interesting for the occasional trip to the strip, right?

We love the fact that people still crave engines like this and the fact that Butler Performanc is still a thriving performance business even a decade after Pontiac ceased being a thing. Who needs an LS engine, right?

Long Lost Film Of ’66 Winternationals Found! Sunday Eliminations With Packed Pomona Grandstands!

Long Lost Film Of ’66 Winternationals Found! Sunday Eliminations With Packed Pomona Grandstands!

(Film and Words by Darr Hawthorne ) In 1965 Santa brought me a new 16mm Bolex film camera, rather than using my dad’s cameras any-longer. The first opportunity I had to use it was on the Pomona Raceway starting line at the 1966 NHRA Winternationals, I’d been granted an NHRA photo/media credential with my best friend, at 14 years of age, lucky I know. It was my third time on the line at the Big Go West.

These ten minutes of original footage shows off some of the Top Fuel legends like the Greek, Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen and Tony Nancy and event winner Mike Snively in Roland Leong’s Hawaiian. Leong recently said of the win, “Thats my wagon (at the end of the video). Must be 1966 and yes we won.” Leong added, “ After that we were on our way out of town going on tour to our first date and a ’55 Chevy towing a ’55 Chevy racecar side swiped a short bridge (while) passing us and then served into us. Wagon ended up upside down, trailer broke off and went about 1/4 mile into the desert. Both ’55 Chevy’s ended up upside down. Thankfully NO ONE got hurt.” Adding, “Thats my story and I’m sticking to it”.

1966 also presented a showcase to the early evolution from stock-bodied cars into nitro funny cars; Jack Chrisman’s red Comet, Gas Ronda’s Mustang, Maynard Rupp’s rear-engined Hemi-Powered Chevelle, Don Gay’s blown GTO, Steve Bovan’s altered wheelbase Nova, Joe Davis’ Colt 45 Mustang, Preston Honea’s Marlin and Bob Davis in the Jolly Green Giant Impala. These lumbering giants were relegated to the dragster classes, since NHRA had not yet recognized a true funny car class.

Along with them, was Super Stocker Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins in his ’66 Nova and event winner Shirley Shahan’s “Drag-on Lady” Plymouth Fury, the first woman to win a National Eliminator, at this Winternationals.

There’s Big John Mazmanian and Stone Woods & Cook with a bunch of AA/Gas Supercharged monsters as well as some early Modified and Comp Eliminator cars too, in front of the packed Pomona Raceway grandstands.

Grab a hot dog and a cold one for ten minutes in the Way Back machine for some long misplaced film from the ’66 Winternationals.
